Since our military is bogged down in Iraq, and our borders are wide open, what is to stop the terrorists from coming here?

How could it be a disaster when we are spending our time and resources rebuilding another's country? Seems like a perfect time to me...Oh, and Bush's failed Iraq war policy that was employed for too many years is what is keepoing us bogged down in Iraq, not the dems, and not 'terrorists'.

Nothing. Which is why we need to look at the root causes of terrorism in order to try and stop it, things such as poverty, injustice, and education. This war of force will only allow the terrorists to grow in number, as is happening in Iraq today.

I've thought about this too. I would imagine (and their own statements confirm) that the terrorists have some sense of American public opinion. They would know that an attack on the US would provoke MORE of a response from the American public, whereas keeping the pressure on in the Middle East makes Americans want to stop the attrition of our troops and come home.

Then again, al-Qaeda miscalculated in the first place, by attacking us on September 11, 2001. Osama apparently took our response to several other attacks (NOT on the mainland US) as evidence that we would not launch more than a token response.

They've miscalculated before. They might do it again.

Or, they're waiting until they can launch a spectacular attack, which will dwarf 9/11 as that attack dwarfed the 1993 WTC bombing. I fear they are looking for nukes. Which is, I assume, why the US has been trying to reduce the number of potential suppliers of nukes to these types, by a variety of means.

PS I do agree with you that the US is by no means out of danger. And I accept people at their word who say they would like to concentrate on protecting the homeland even though they disagree with the war in Iraq. What troubles me is that some of these same people are the ones who have leaked information on other government surveillance programs that have nothing to do with Iraq, such as the effective and legal bank monitoring system revealed by the New York Times (among others), which has since been discontinued.

It relies upon. initially, in case you mean do they quit coming the following, the answer is not any, even by technique of conservative information purveyors, new terrorists were got here upon, and thwarted the following. Are they a lot less probably to achieve success the following? in all likelihood, yet no longer in elementary words because we are over there, yet as well because we are a lot extra aggressively monitoring all suspicious activity because that 9/11 and because that maximum of Europe, Indonesia, China, Saudi Arabia and Israel are also monitoring for terrorist activity on a larger factor. Has it had an result? definite a twofold result. In Afghanistan, the position terrorist cellular activity remains severe, and the position our initial roundups of suspects has given us the means to interrogate them and advance extra suspects, the outcome has been sturdy. In Iraq, it type of feels to be operating any incorrect way round, we are making extra suspects than we had before.

You could have a soldier on every street and terrorist attacks will still happen. They still happen in Iraq don't they, yet there are troops everywhere. Terrorist attacks still happened in Northern Ireland when the UK had a huge military presence there - even today Northern Ireland is a major deployment zone. There is nothing - NOTHING - that is going to stop someone determined to cause destruction, not ID cards, roadblocks, anything. If someone wants to kill people they are going to do it. Simple as that.

The secret is to not make enemies in the first place.

Well first of all, border security and our military wouldnt have stopped 9/11. The hijackers were all here legally. But that is what terrorists do. They find the cracks in security and exploit them no matter what target it is; London, NY, East Africa, a Japanese or Spanish subway, you name it.

The only thing to prevent them are good security measures and watchful people over here, and our ability to strike at state sponsors of terrorism abroad. In other words having a hall of fame goalie would be like having good security. They will stop them most of the time but they arent perfect and cant stop them all. The rest of the hockey team has to be out there playing offense so we are not constantly on defense.

If we let state sponsors of terror get a pass without doing anything about them, they will grow and become stronger and itll be 50 hockey players taking shots at your poor goalie.

first off, our military is not bogged down in Iraq, where did you gather that info? less than 8% of our military is currently in Iraq, you need to do some research n US Military force structure. Units are constantly rotated. as to the boarders bieng wide open, so are every counties borders wide open, you can stroll into any country i nthe world, as long as you avoid the official boarder crossing sites. terrorist could enter, they do enter, but don't go thinking there are hundreds of thousands of made suicidal bombers looking to die in the infidels land. remember an edict of these extreme Muslims, is to die on there own soil, other wise no rewards, thats why they chose airplanes, to them, technically, they where not on foreign soil. check out your Muslim war history, they do not fight in another religions territory, they fight the Israeli's because they believe it is there land. SO don't expect mass attacks, also there really are a lot fewer terrorist than the media loves to hype. Just like Meth heads, on the news 99% of people are hooked on meth, but lets get real, and keep out the news generating hype.

Did you read the article about the USA guy, who was arrested a couple of days ago?
Osama bin laden didn't even know what to do with his rag tag fighters, after he drove the USSR out of Afghanistan for the USA, when Christopher Paul from Columbus, Ohio came to him, laying out a plan to fight jihad in the USA for fun.
It appears, that we have homegrown our own 9/11 master minds. I always wondered, how some stinking camel herders could come up with a devilish plan like 9/11.
That still doesn't explain our presence in Iraq, doesn't it?

They know that the American people for the most part possess guns. That means that terrorists can attack us is by stealth as they did on 9/11, but they could not occupy American residential communities without being exposed to the armed American civilian population.

Of course, they could always pick on those cities where the law-abiding civilians are not allowed to possess guns at home - such crime-free havens as New York City and Washington DC, where only the criminals are allowed to possess guns.
