The head hostess at our restaraunt, has recently been promoted to manager. While she has the authority to hire and fire, disipline and change any policy, we are still required to tip her out.
The servers are very upset about this and do not understand why we should have to pay someone, who has fired our co workers and has authority over us. Shouldn't it be the owners who compensate her and not us?

You should keep a count of what you are giving to her and write a letter to the owner or Regional Manager (which ever applies) and explain how much, the situation and your dismay. I would also ask for a employee handbook, which almost every job has to issue when hiring someone new. It is typically given during orientation or the training period. I would review the section on tip pay outs because I have known for the bar and hostess to make off your tips in small percentages but NEVER a manager. Managers normal have a salary or set wage by the company because they DO NOT get tips. If your co-workers/friends were fired due to this reason and you find out this is not the normal procedure, they maybe able to sue her. I would talk to an attorney and ask her for a pink slip indicatting why I was fired.

I worked as a server and bartender for many years.

It was never required to tip a manager. Host yes, but the manager with authority over people should not be taking money from them.

Sounds like blackmail to me. If you don't give her money, she fires you for some other cause she can come up with. I've worked in several different restaurants and never had to tip out the hostess. Something's wrong.

I agree, the management should be paying her more and you guys should not have to tip her out.
Managers do not have the right to take tips from you. That's part of being a manager, bigger paychecks and NO TIPS!
