The motor has been burnt out on my bmw rear window(thanks to my son) It smelt bloody awful It is open and I and took ages to stop smoking.Obviously I want to close it, even as a temporary measure while I find a replacement .Is there a way of closing it manually? Ive read that it can be done but no one says how!
Does anybody know how to do it?

Looks like you'll have to dislodge the glass from the channel it sits in, then hoist it up & wedge it somehow. To be fair to your son, it sounds like the regulator mechanism is seized and that's what might have caused the motor to burn out. Don't tell him, though!

I am not familiar with BMWs but the typical power window would require taking the door panel off, removing the motor and gears and manually lifting the window. If you have paid to have all this done put the motor in NOW.Otherwise tape the window over.Lastly do you have a dealer close by? They would be the ones who would know.

Bite the bullet and replace the motor - there's no easy way of lifting the glass.
If you remove the glass from the channel it's even more work - the motor still needs replacing. Why work on it twice?

same thing as tf, you would have to remove the inner door panel, unbolt the motor from thr window regulator, manualy
pull the window up and rebolt the motor. on som cars the motor and regulator are one piece and must be replaced together. like the motor is permintaly rivited to the window regulator. don't know on your car though.

you would have to take the inside door panel apart and find the motor and loosen it and pull the window up and tighten the connections again - but while you are in their just replace the motor

A bit off topic, but when I had a Rover 216 they made a big thing about how to close the electric sunroof manually if the electrics failed. Not a thing about the electric windows though!

Only by taking the door mechanism to bits. Consult your friendly Haynes manual.
