I agree with the other answers, but they also get much better gas mileage than an SUV.

There are several types of crossovers. Basically, it's a blend of genres, like sedan with SUV, SUV with minivan, and so on. It's something that doesn't really fit in a particular category.
The best example I can think of is Chrysler Pacifica. It's not really a sedan or a wagon, it's not tall enough for SUV and it has car doors, not van slide doors. Yet it's big enough. It's hard to describe what is is.
However, most car industry folks use the term "car-based SUVs" instead of crossovers. Basically, it's an SUV, but built like a car, not as tough as a truck, so don't take it offroading, but it will have 4WD and versatility of an SUV, sorta best of both worlds... up to a point.

Its really an SUV body on a car frame. Essentially you get the advantage of the interior space an SUV provides but they generally sit lower to the ground like cars and thus aren't very good for off road applications.

It looks like an SUV but is usually built on a car chassis. The Ford Edge or Lexus RX350 are examples.
