What it really means is that the load you shot did not impregnate your wife or partner. It was, therefore, a "dud."

Basically, it means that the bullet you just fired didn't actually shoot anything. It's kinda like a blank round - just it wasn't intended to be blank.
It can be used in day to day expression to mean that what you have done won't have any effect.
