This is something that really baffles me. I am presently using this PC with 2000 and is working fine with a conventional mouse. It has given me no trouble at all.

Then one day, I decided to use a plug and play mouse. When I reboot the PC with the new mouse, it literally showed nothing. on screen.

Initially, I suspected nothing and I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out what went wrong. It was only later when I decided to use back the old mouse and everything went back to normal.

Can the change of one simple item like a mouse create so much trouble? I mean I got nothing on the screen. It is just blank.

YES, Changing ANYTHING On A P.C. Can Cause It To Freeze Or Crash. Most Likely, Your "Plug And Play" Mouse Needed Some "Software" Installed First. (WINDOWS FAULT, Even "VISTA" Their Most "Advanced" Operating System Has No "TRUE" "Plug And Play" Support)

I would never install the software that comes with a mouse, it will be seen and usable without. It can cause trouble even later if you have to replace your existing mouse where it might cause another problem. I once had a batch of monitors which caused Windows to contiuously reboot on starting.

Yes I have seen where the addition of a single usb device (remember usb ports supply power to the device) was enough that the powersupply could not handle it and all sorts of things went screwy like the video card stopped working

PC fails to recognize mouse. lol. They are a lot like Pandora's box. They are supposedly all right until you hit the first key. I've given up.

Yes.

And

Yes. But you probably replaced it wrong and in the process damaged some other component of the system.

Yes, it can. A bad driver could cause conflicts with other drivers and render the system unbootable, as you have seen.
