Unlike everyone else said World of Warcraft is one of a kind. There is only one game that is even remotely(spelling?) like it. And to kick some of the games the people above me said aside. While GuildWars is free to play it is a horrible game I bought it and played for a month or two and quit. I do not like only seeing people outside my group only in town...took the whole instance thing a bit to far. Lineage is also horrible the way you move is crap and only 3-4 different races to pick from and only 2-3 classes that they all share. Second Life is....dont get me started. City of Heros while it has a very good character creator the games missions/quests are all the same exact thing...just like Matrix Online. EverQuest 2 decent game so I cant say much about it other then I did not like the crafting and I hated the Auction House.

The game that is like WoW in some ways is Vanguard:Saga of Heroes. The game is good and plays (more or less) like WoW just with a different graphics scheme. The main difference in Vanguard is they have no instances if you want to kill a boss you have to be in the same place at the same time with everyone else trying to kill the same exact boss. While in WoW every main dungeon is a instance made for only for you and your group.

On a side note UO is a good game. The first MMROPG I have ever played. (saw person above my post)

Definately not. It is the most well known but there are many other MMORPG's out there.

World of Warcraft, or WoW, has been the most popular by far in the genre, but other games, like Everquest and Lord of the Rings online, offer the same type of gameplay.

World of Warcraft is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). There are many many other MMORPGs out there, but World of Warcraft (WoW) is currently the most popular - over 8 million subscribers.

For its genere, which is MMORPG, the answer is most deffiently no. There are MANY MMORPGs; some of which are free, some of which are subscription based like WoW.

WoW is noted for being one of the easiest MMORPGS to play, and the one where one has to put the least amount of effort into to become more powerful. (Someone see this as a good thing, many see it as a bad one.) Compaerd to almost all the other MMORPGs I've ever played, the interface for WoW was the simplest.

No. The grandfather of all mmorpgs is Ultima Online (UO). It is going into its 10th year with a graphics overhaul this year. It may not have the subscription numbers that WOW has, but it does have a very loyal customer base. There is no game even close to the depth that Ultima Online has.

Check it out : www.uo.com

no there are TONS. just to name a few:

Lord of the Rings Online
Everquest 2
Guild Wars
Vanguard
Lineage 2
ect ect

just search google for "mmorpg" and you'll get tons of results. World of Warcraft is the most successful of them all though, and the most refined in my opinion.

There are other similar games out there, all slightly different. I play Guild Wars which is a free one, you buy the game and then there are no monthly fees on it.
