The composite decking will hold up alot better than wood, but the very best would be redwood if you can afford it, otherwise good old treated lumber.

I am a self-employed general contractor. I have constructed many decks using various materials. You can build a deck using anything from 2x4s on up. However to do a qua lity job I would recommend that you build your frame with at least 2x6s or 2x8s connected to 4x4 posts concreted at least 16" in the ground for adiquate support. I usually use #2 grade lumber (you can use #1 grade but it is kind of pricey, and #2 works just as well). For your deck floor, use the lumber that is milled for it: five quarter decking boards. Also in #2 grade. Get all this in green or brown treated lumber. IIf I can be of furthur assistance dont hesitate to email me.

Price wise I would say pressure treated pine. But after years of having to clean and seal every year, I'm thinking about changing my opinion to this new plastic wood they are using. It's straight, doesn't warp, and doesn't need any special treatments to look nice other than being rinsed wit a garden hose.
