The Hard Drive may have Errors on it and you could try running Scan Disk and then Defrag.
On Windows 2000 and I assume XP, Scan Disk; Double click My Computer and then Right Click "Local Drive C:" Then click "Properties > Tools > Error Checking"
Look down and you will see Defrag and you can do that after Scan Disk is complete. If, these not help the Drive may be getting ready to Crash it's last party.

I should say, if, you have not Defraged regular it can take hours to complete depending on the size of your HDD.
Also, Turn off your Screen Saver in Control Panel > Display > Screen Saver Sometimes it interfere with the Defrag when the Screen Saver start. If, your Display is set to turn off and you see it is dark and want to know what going on you can mouse the mouse and it light up, but, I just look at the little Hard Drive Light and if it Flicker then it still Defraging.

Click on My computer then put cursor on the desired hard disk. Click right it will open property click on the tab TOOLS then click on Check Disk. It will correct your disk. This will solve problem.

You better use: 1. De fragment 2.Disk Clean up 3. Check Disk
also Clean History/Cookies/Trash Bin from time to time. This procedure will always help you.

Hope this will help

Well, then your HD is obviously broken and/or faulty

I reccommend you get a new one ASAP and back up all your data before it decides to die

if it's already too late, then try sticking it in the freezer, then plug it back in

Look for some service shops that fix PC-s (or computer shops) and tell them your problem. They'll know what to do.
