I think he fell in and drowned under the influence of drugs, despite the rumour about him owing money to his builder.

The official cause of death was drowning. He was found in his the swimming pool of his country home after being noticed missing by other house guests.Including the other members of the Rolling Stones and Marianne Faithful.
It is thought he went outside to get some fresh air after suffering a mild asthma attack and in a drunken disorientated state fell into the pool.
There were levels of T.H.C.,alchohol and opiates found in his bloodstream during the autopsy.
His airways were constricted, but there was no evidence of vomiting or asphyxiation prior to the intake of water into the lungs.
His body showed no evidence of lacerations or marking that would constitute suspicion of an attack on him prior to drowning.
There was never any consideration of anything other than accidental death.

If you've seen the recent movie about, it goes as far as to put forth the idea that one of Brian's employees "Frank Thorogood" and he had a fight in the pool that night. Brian was drunk. The employee may have been negligent in leaving a "drunken" Brian in a swimming pool. This is an interesting movie. Supposedly this employee confessed something at his recent deathbed about Brian's death.

He was found motionless at the bottom of his swimming pool, where he had been for only a few minutes. His girlfriend at the time stated repeatedly that he was still alive when they took him out; insisting that he still had a pulse. However when the doctors arrived, it was too late for him and he was pronounced dead on the scene. The coroner's report stated "Death by misadventure", and noted that his liver and heart were heavily enlarged by drug and alcohol abuse.

In 2000, his old girlfriend (his girlfriend of the time when he died...Anna something) told the press that he had been murdered by a builder who had been staying with them renovating the house they shared. The man (I can't remember his name) allegedly confessed to the murder on his death bed. There was only one witness though, the Stones driver. So, who knows?

The finding was death by misadventure, with the cause of death being asphyxiation. Do you doubt the authorities? ;)
