Okay. I'm 19 and my mother carried me as a dependent this year and last. I had a baby in January but she did not carry the baby. Am I supposed to file, even though she carried me as a dependent, and carry the baby??

I need help. I've never done this and I don't have money to spend on someone to do my taxes for me. Is Turbotax.com really free and what do I do???

No, since you are claimed as a dependent, you can't claim a dependent. If you and your baby both lived with your mom and she could legally claim you, she can claim the baby also - if it will save any taxes for her, she can file an amended return and claim the baby also.

At 19, for your mom to claim you, you either have to be a full-time student and not provide over half of your own support, or else you have to have made less than $3300 for the year and your mom has to have provided over half of your support.

Post again if you have additional questions, or feel free to email me and I'll try to help.

Based upon the somewhat incomplete information that you've provide, I believe that your mother should have carried both you and your baby as dependents. If this is the case, you cannot claim your baby as a dependent even though your mother did not. Your mother will have to file an amended return to correct this mistake. These rules are explained in the tax book that is sent out each year. If you didn't get that book, the rules can be found on the IRS web site or you could pick up any one of a number of tax books that populate the book stores at this time of year.

dont file, and yes turbotax.com is free, but since u need someone to do your taxes for u why dont u try someone of your friends or a relative? this way they wont charge ya, and try asking your mom to carry your baby if thats what you want but my advice for you is to carry this responsibility by your own self, after all that is your daughter

on your taxes it will ask you if anyone else claims you as a dependant. check yes. you will also be asked about your dependants. enter in your childs info. the nice thing about tubo tax is it will calculate everything according to your input. as for free i think it is only if you buy the cd. it pays for the service too. doing it from their website directly has a charge. but there are services that are free if you make under a certain amount. turbo might offer that as well. best to go to turbotax online and read up on that part.
