Right now I have 5 neons - and one male betta - so i figue that leaves me with about 5 inches left (5X1.5' = 7.5 and 1 betta X 3' = 10.5).

I would like a couple colorful fish that i can just keep 2 of and dont need to school? Also they have to be peacful cause my betta is very friendly and passive and my neons and fun loving peacful guys. Any help much appreciated

PS I have a power filter and a heater if that helps?

First off, NOTHING with long flowing fins, like Fancy Guppies, lyretails or sailfins, like danios, tetras, mollies, and some swordtails. Your betta will fight these kinds!
No Gouramis either. That is the Betta's cousin, and they will fight them. Gouramis will also find the betta to be a threat sometimes too.
I also would NOT recommend barbs or chicilids.

I know you say he's peaceful now, but if you give him a fish (or two) who he finds to be a threat, he will fight with them.

Other than that, your possibilities are quite wide open. If you get a pair of livebarers, you'll have the baby problem, but with the betta and the parents in the tank, they will eat the babies, and keep the population down. Any kind of smallfin Tetra would be good, maybe some zebra danios, Swordtails, Plattys, Mollies, A couple of Corycats, (they don't like to be alone, they're rediculously sociable!), or anything you choose. Just keep the Betta in mind, and watch out for fin-nippers, or something that he would fight with.

Good luck with it, and have fun!!!

You probbaly have more room than you think... That 1" per gallon "rule" is so bogus and broken that it very, very rarely applies to a tank. You would really do yourself a favor to forget it to be totally honest.

The firt thing I notice is you don't have a bottom fish. Some cory catfish have nice colors and if kept in a group of 3-4, they are all pretty active fish. A kuhli loach or two would be a bad idea either. They aren't nearly as active, but rather brightly colored.

For really bright and active you could add a pair or so of killifish if any are available in your area or if you don't mind ordering off the web.

4-5 zebra danios would certainly add a lot of activity and they are flashy and peaceful little fish.

In my planted 15 gallon tank I have had the following for time enough to know it works well:

A Betta
A group of Cardinal Tetras
A group of Cory Cats
A couple of Amano Shrimp.

The Cory cats are a great addition because they'll scavange the bottom of the tank for food, are pretty low-waste fish, are very peaceful and are different then the others. I wouldn't go with any brightly colored fish that can be territorial or cause problems with the betta, like a gourami, since the tank isn't so big.

5 Gallon tanks are maximum proper for the two a single betta, a fry tank (for egg fertalization) or for a quarantine/scientific institution tank. All tanks could be filtered and (if mandatory) heated - use an air powered clear out in case you opt for bubbles/oxygenation.

Some of the Gourami family are very colorful. They are a little larger than the neons and beta you have though. Alternatively, you could look at the Molly and Platty family. Lots of them are very colorful. Same thing with Guppies. Be careful though, they tend to breed very easily, so ask the salesperson to only give you males or only females if you aren't interested in having any "fish babies" that could crowd your tank. This happened to me, but I had a larger tank so it was ok. Very cool to watch the little guys swimming around and grow up!

i have 2 neon tetras and they love to swim around with my guppie! the three of them act like best friends. also, glassfish are really cool! i'm not sure if 'glassfish' is their official name, but they are very neat fish. they are mostly see-through, except their head. they swim mostly in the middle of the tank and are very friendly!

there are lots of other breeds of tetras that you can get to go with the other fish that you have which arent very large fish. your other options are mollies, platys, guppies, but they all love to breed so make sure they are both females
