if a person said similar thing(s) and he/she were not of Imus' "background", and that person was fired, you same "its not about the 1st amendment" people would be squeeling otherwise, so I yawn at that argument

Imus was a 'shock jock' - the word SHOCK should be noted - he was not an employee of Walmart; however, there are certain 'educators' saying far worse, one of which being disussed on YA, is this person being fired? or are liberals defending his 1st amendment rights?

Imus doesnt need the ACLU. He has millions, and probably will walk away from this with 5-6 million, as he has a contract, and most likely racial slurs are not cause for breaking the contract.
Ive listened to Imus for over 30 years. I remember when he wa fired and sent to Cleveland. I remember when he actually played songs. It is ironic that CBS had no problem with his juvenile behavior, as long as they werent fined by the FCC. But as soon as "Hymietown" Jackson, and "Tawana" Sharpton (by the way, Rev Al never has paid a dime of the judgement against for slander, no apologized has he?), start organizing an advertisers boycott, CBS slammed the door. Interesting that two "Reverends" in a religion that preaches forgiveness, tolerance, love, and "Christ-like" behavior would refuse to accept an apology.
Well, expect to see Imus on Satellite Radio, with his good friend Mel Karmazin president of Serrius.

This issue is not about the First Amendment -- the government is not preventing him from freely expressing his political opinions. The issue is about capitalism, that is, advertisers pulling out because they do not want their products or services being associated with the current controversy.
As to NAMBLA, they are advocating to have the age of consent reduced. Doesn't anyone have the right to ask the government to change a law. If they keep asking it won't change my mind. But are you afraid that if they keep asking you will change your mind? Or the minds of all those degenerate "liberals"? Seriously, the ACLU is defending their right to seek vindication of their political speech rights, not that the ACLU is seeking to lower the age of consent.
Notice in both answers that the right to free speech (or contests concerning any Amendment) deals with government intervention in taking something away. For instance, if your wife searches your car, finds drugs and gives them to the police, there is no Fourth Amendment violation because the wife does not work for the cops.

Imus should have known that he is an employee and that his employer has a policy. He can go to the street and say whatever he wants but when he's at work he represent his employer and he violated the company policy. Same thing would have happen to a Wal-mart employee or any other employee of a company who have similar policies or any government employee. You see rap singers do not have any policy to follow in that regards and if they do no one have complain yet.
I guarantee you that if you go to Wal-mart and an employee says your daughter is a ho you will go to the manager and complain, and demand for the employee to be fired.

Imus' 1st Amendment rights were not violated. He said it and he is bearing the consequences, but the consequences are commercial--not legal. No one is suing him. There is no case to defend. And-btw-the ACLU doesn't file cases until someone hires them to do so. Imus can hire the ACLU if he want to, but he has no cause of action. He had the right to say what he did and CBS had the right to cancel him. End of story.

Imus has 1st amendment rights to say whatever he wants. However, the networks also have the right to make sure that he doesn't say it on their airwaves while they are paying him! No one is arresting him for saying anything. He can stand in the street and say anything he wants...or he can say it on the internet the same as you and I! I'm sure there are a few things that I could say that would get me fired, but it has nothing to do with my 1st amendment rights...just where I say it!

1. Yes, they are.
2. Imus's first amendment rights didn't need defended. The first amendment doesn't prevent you from receiving the consequences of your free speech.

This is not a freedom of speech issue. Inus can say whatever he likes. But no one is obliged to provide him with a microphone if they don't like what he says.
