My brother was arrested for a stupid prank and it made the news ... he insists on recieving royalites now since he was a feature on the news!
He worked at Dunkin Donuts and he kept putting salt instead of sugar in people's coffee ... he did it for awhile - just enough not to be too noticeable.
As he started choosing "favorite" customers, he upped his antics, they caught on, and he got arrested, rightfully so.
He thinks that this is hysterical and should be recieving royalties for it.
He is in his 30's and is not intellectually or mentally challenged, but how do I get it through his thick head that he will not recieve royalties for this before he really makes a fool of himself contacting a lawyer for a case!

Take him to a hospital and show him someone that ingested something they are allergic to.
Make a huge sign for the front yard that says "(His name) likes to manipulate people and endanger the lives of others and get paid for it- Beep if you think he's an idiot"
Tell him he needs to grow up- and make sure anybody he dates knows about this...see if they think it's "funny".
Take him to a lawyer's office and ask" if someone has an allergic reaction to what he did and dies from it- what can he be charged with?"
OR>>>>>
he's 30- let him learn a lesson that will humiliate him on his own.

You cannot receive royalties for something that is "news" as it is the publics right to know. It became the public's right to know when he was charged criminally.
The only way he could receive any sort of fee would be if a news source offerred him a fee for an exclusive interview (and on something as stupid and evil as tampering with someone's food, not likely). However, even if he did, he would not see a dime of it because it would be held in escrow for any of his victims to claim...the Courts have deemed you cannot benefit monetarily by committing a crime and then selling your story for it.

Let him make a fool of himself. He is an idiot to think he can get royalties because he made the news - watch COPS - do you think all those idiot law breakers are geting royalties?
Bein as he chose favorites to harass, he better talk to a lawyer about them not filing harassment and assault charges - one of them may have had high blood pressure - that is assault if he gave them salt because it is dangerous to their health. He REALLY needs to talk to a lawyer, not about royalties but about covering his own butt against further charges.

If he's in his 30's and he's still doing childish pranks then there is really nothing you can do about it. You could talk to him about how childish of a prank it was for someone his age. And how he could have killed someone by adding so much salt into their coffee. Too much salt is bad for the body.

Contaminating people's food is no laughing matter, and for people with heart conditions, high blood pressure, etc. SALT is very dangerous. He could have caused someone to worsen their medical condition, or worse...
...but maybe he needs to make a fool of himself in court, so that he can see & hear how dumb he has been.

No wonder he works at Dunkin Donuts for a living.
He could have killed someone with high blood pressure or kidney problems, that would have been real hilarious

If your brother is ever going to grow up, he needs to learn a lesson. Let him dig his hole and make a fool of himself. This is "tough love."
