Hubby and I are separated in the first year of our marriage. I went to file my taxes, but it asks for his social security number. I don't know how to get it, and he won't give it to me because he thinks I'm going to use it to open accounts.

I left and took what could fit in my car. I wasn't exactly thinking clearly, nor did I realize that I would need it for anything.

Actually you can file seperately and never mention that you were married unless you did file the year before together when you were married. If so then you should be able to get a copy of that. If you have never filed together then don't worry about it. If he does put your name on a tax return the IRS will either call you or send you a letter. I remember when I got divorced. The jerk and I had filed one tax return together I left the same year and when it came tax time again I did not put his SSN on my tax return. But the IRS I can't remember either called me or sent me a letter explaining that they were taking part of my taxes because one year we had file together. I explained that we had been seperated since the March before etc and he said it would happen again and if he put my SSN on any of his tax returns he would be in trouble with the IRS. So the answer is no if you left before the middle of the year and I am hoping you did then you do not have to. If he refuses and you did leave say in October then you need to call the IRS and explain what your ex is doing and ask how to get it

If married in 2014, but husband didn't own Social Security number then. NOW he has received Social Security in Apr 2015, can we file 2014 as married filing jointly?

Go down to the IRS and tell them you want to file "married but separate" and don't have his number. They should help you. Also, seems like your husband would need yours too for filing his taxes. Good luck.

A letter of explination to the ISR filed with the tax forms should take care of the problem. You might be asked to provide additional proof at some point but this problem is not unheard of.

See a lawyer. It may be that there is a way to force your husband to disclose his ssn number. You could also call the IRS and ask them what you should do. Their number should be in the phone book.
I'm thinking that this is not the only time you are going to need his ssn. So take steps to get it now. Does he have yours? I wonder what damage he could do to your credit or if that is possible? As I said, see a lawyer.

I would just file single. You haven`t been married very long and it shouldn`t be a problem.
