"Why do you feel the need to embarrass yourself like that?"

don't really have a case like that. my mom is 57 this year, and frankly she wore way more revealing or "out there" clothes than I do. And she has never had an issue with anything that i have ever worn to this day. however, I am a bit on the conservative side anyways.

my father who just turned 60 hates anything baggy, bulky or frumpy and would prefer that all woman regardless of age wear short mini skirts and low cut tops. which is just very weird. but then, he's a man.

In the mini skirt era, I think we all got the comment about wearing a belt???! I have to admit that my parents never really said anything to upset me about my dress sense, and even now, my husband says I'd look good even in a black bin bag, so I guess I'm lucky. Some of today's fashion though is an eyesore - what possesses these younger girls to wear low slung trousers, too short tops, with a roll of flab hanging around somewhere in between and think they look good? I think dress sense is all about wearing what suits your shape and not wearing something just because it's in fashion.

I was so embarrassed when my dad stopped me and asked me what I had on as I was going to high school. I was a child of the 60's too,but mini skirts were in and I just wanted to be cool. I felt so ashamed. I was a good person and went to a catholic grammar school with nuns.

The kids now have no shame.

I remember my first 'Mini" skirt.
I swear it was just one inch above my knee. They got shorted as I got older but that is a different story!
My mother didn't say anything, but her look of disapproval said it all.
Then my aunt who was known for being very WI and prim and proper said" Don't you look nice" or some such and we never looked back.
Of course what was said by the family behind my back was probably something else altogether.
I tried to be laid back with my daughters over the years, but I found myself saying things like " You will look back at yourself wearing that in ten years time and think "Oh how could I have been so stupid!"
It didn't work!!!

I am 29 and my mom would simply say - you will be wearing that straight back into your room because you are not leaving this house like that:)

BUT that happened all of 2 times, I grew up with the "wonderful" examples of Nirvana and grunge was in full effect...

As long as I covered my belly my mom was cool with it.

I was a goth in the eighties. As well as wearing black all the time, I wore lots of ripped mens shirts, leggings with broken clocks and daggers on them. Also had a boob tube that i used to wear as a skirt!! Extremmely back-combed and crimped hair. Also quite extreme make-up - i used to draw cobwebs and spiders on my face with liquid eye-liner!!
My mum was of the opinion that if they left me alone then I would grow out of it.
My dad used to go nuts when he saw me all gothed up. Calling me Morticia and zombiegirl!! His usual phrase was 'would it kill you to wear a dress once in a while?'

My dad pulled the "where's the rest of your shirt?!" thing with me too. My parents were pretty cool about what I wore most of the time though.
