The town i live in recently purchased a "gas chamber" to kill animals with instead of using a humane way to euthenize these animals. I'll include a link to the article so you can read up on the issue some more if you wish.

Wow why would anyone choose to use the gas chamber. As director of the shelter she should be more against it than to purchase a new one. Find someone else to take that position. Usually small counties have a $$ budget that barely handles the cost of food yet she has rnough for a new chamber??

I think you need to re-read these articles - the use of gas chambers for animals has been outlawed for 17 years. Apparently Tifton was 'unaware' of this at the time of the purchase - but if you read closer, it seems they made the decision as a last resort to combat the overwhelming overpopulation of unwanted pets. Gassing is cheaper than injection and can be performed by untrained individuals = easier and cheaper.

There can be no doubt that gassing animals to death is inhumane. It's not even desirable to give animals anaesthetic gas without premedication to make the procedure peaceful - just slapping a concious animal on gas makes them panic, and is very unpleasant to watch. Lethal injection is the humane way because it is painless and very peaceful.

Sounds like the people of this Tifton Shelter are about to get in some serious trouble for this unethical and illegal practice.

Depending on the chemical used, it can be humane. Carbon monoxide (what is used in the article) is extremely humane.
It is an odorless gas that is a silent killer. Thousands of people are killed by it's presence in their house ( that is why you buy carbon monoxide detectors). You basically just get a headache and then fall asleep. Minor convulsions can be seen, but it is the same way with some types of euthanasia. You are slowly starved of oxygen, but the body doesn't know it. You fall asleep and your heart stops beating- that is is. In euthanasia, if they do not inject enough drug, you can have a pretty horrible death. I have seen it happen- a dog needed 4 times what a normal dog would need to be put down- it was pretty bad to see.

I really do not see a downside to a carbon monoxide chamber- most people are just against it because it reminds them of the holocaust- where painful gases were used- where you bleed out internally before you die, burning gases, etc.

I thought the point of animal shelters was to give a safe home to waifs, strays and unwanted pets until a new home is found for them? In the UK the Dog Society never put a healthy dog down. I think if a premises calls itself and animal Shelter then they shouldn't be putting animals down - it's contravenes the trade desriptions act

Carbon monoxide chambers are fine for smaller animals like mice, rats, guinea pigs, ferrets, etc... There are mixed discussions about using them for animals any larger than that. Personally, I would never gas anything larger. Their lungs are larger and therefore feel more of a suffocation feeling than smaller animals, who are knocked unconscious immediately. Injections are more expensive, which is probably why your town purchased the chamber. I would be upset if I were you also.

Well since the critters are God's animals, I don't think they should be killed at all. I think some one with a kind heart should open a NO KILL rescue. The things small towns do to get attention!!!

Good Luck!

I dont think that any animal should be "put to sleep" (murderered) unless it kills or tries to seriously hurt someone. We dont kill homless people, or orphans. Its illegal to kill people but then again WERE "overpopulated". (but abortion is legal.. hmm) anyway.. i dont understand the governments supposed LOGIC.. anyway..

Yeah, I agree with you! I it HAS to be done, find a more humane way!

It's wrong.

The animals should be humanely killed, or not killed at all.
