Determine the perimeter of a polygon

Adding the sum of its sides

Triangle

The sides are 3, 4, 5 = 12

Rectangle

Perimeter formula

Let

Length = 10

Width = 5

P = 2L + 2W

P = 2(10) + 2(5)

P = 20 + 10

P = 30

A polygon is a closed figure (shape) made up of line segments. That means there can be many sides or only a few sides and that all of them must be straight. Remember, no openings!

Perimeter (P) is the distance around.

We need to find the distance around your shape. If your polygon only had four sides like a box shape then we could measure the 4 lines and add them up. Well, your polygon might have 20 sides or 30 sides, maybe only 3 sides.

That makes no difference at all.!! It is simple: measure each and everyone of those sides and add them up. If there are lots of sides, you may want to number them so that you can keep tract. You can number them like P = s1 + s2 + s3 + s4...

I do hope this is clear and easy for you to understand. Good luck in finding perimeter. Remember to put the units down such as inches, feet, centimeters, yards etc.

you find one side of the polygon, and multiply that number by the sumber of sides. I.E. To determine the perimenter of a hexagon, with a side of 5 in. multiply 5 in. by six sides to get 30 inches. 30 in. is the perimeter.
