If I have a filter on any phone socket in my home, can I use that socket to connect to my broadband internet, or do I have to use the main socket?

Oh dear, what a lot of absolutely wrong answers!!!!!!!!!!!
If you have broadband, it will be accessible by all telephone points in the house that are connected to the main line. You should have DSL Filters on all extensions, not just the one that you are using to connect your broadband. BT recommend that you utilise the main socket for a reason: if the internal telephone wiring in your house is long and complicated, this can lower the connection speed. For example, when I switched from 512Kbps to 1.5Mbps, my modem/router was attached to my studio socket. This gave a downstream reading after rebooting of 768Kbps. However, I attached the modem to the main socket in the lounge and it instantly changed to 1503Kbps. This means that the internal wiring in the house is not so good (was installed by the builders, so that gives you a good indication). I would suggest that if you are running a router/modem for a wireless network, you connect it to the main socket as it really doesn't matter where the modem is as long as all the computers can connect to it. Should you get areas where computers are out of range to connect wirelessly, Netgear have just brought out a new range of router/modems/access points that give up to 1000% more coverage than conventional g wireless systems. I know they work as I needed to configure one at work which goes through 4 breeze-block walls and still maintains a 52% signal in the office next door!!!

Hope this helps.

There is no need for a filter on the main socket. You only need to have the cable in there directly.

No take the filter off and connect it to the socket you were previously using.

The filters are for the phones. If you have only one jack then you would need to get a splitter and plug the dsl modem to one of the split jacks and the filter to phone in the other jack.

The filters can only be used to connect to telephones. If you use a filter adapter for your DSL connection it won't work properly.
