I never saw Columbo fail on a case. He was brilliant. Honorable mentions to Rockford, Mannix, Cannon and Eliot Ness.

i think monk might be the funniest, and the most original, and is definately my favorite, but i think the best might be robert goren (vincent d'onofrio) from law and order criminal intent. he has an uncanny ability to see the big picture, and he is so knowledgeable about so many things. columbo would round out the top 3.
