The submersible pump for the sump well in our basement has stopped pumping on a couple of occasions leading to waterlogging of our basement. Due to early detection ( and the pump starts to pump when we give a kick), it was not serious, but we were left with wet carpet. How do we ensure that this will never happen ?

The best system is a double pump with alarms. You install two pumps that alternate duty and if one or the other fails then the good pump goes into full duty and the controller sends an alarm, either audible or visual.

This system is a bit pricey but so is new carpet, furniture, etc

I know of 2.
I used to put in a sump alarm that set off a loud high pitched sound that warned you that the sump pump has not turned on for one reason or an other. It was powered by a 9 volt battery
The second one is they do make a battery back up sump pumps that run off a 12 volt deep cycle battery. I know Sears sold the 12 volt sump and the high water alarm I used to buy those at the local plumbing supply house but I would believe Home Depot or Lowes or a place like that would have it. First I would try the local hardware store and give them your business first.
There maybe other things out now but I don't know of them.
I would not be a good adviser if I didn't remind that both of these are ran by batteries and you will have to check and make sure that they are holding a charged every so often to protect you from the over flowing of the crock. There instruction should let you know how often they recommend you check the charge.

They have a system now that actually uses your water supply to the house to pump your sump if your pump fails. You would have to talk to someone that knows more about this to find and install one. Alarms and all that a good but if no one is around to hear it, or your battery backup runs down if your away from the house for an extended period or the power fails, your stilll going to get wet

Find and fix the source of water in your basement. Buy a new sump pump. I believe they have ones with a battery alarm that goes off if it loses power, or senses water without power. Also for the musty carpet, get a good quality dehumidifier with a large capacity and let it run. I have used a product called damp-rid too that is little calcium chloride pellets that absorb and trap water in the air. They are cheap, and work well in bathrooms and closets. Don't be cheap, you could be saving some of your valuable possessions in the process.

You can purchase a battery back-up pump. It sounds like the float switch on your current pump is hanging up. Thats why it operates when you kick it. May just be some rust or other debris holding it from working.

Replace that pump with a new one and then have a 2-pump system installed.
