Your return is due on April 16, 2007, whether you owe or are expecting a refund. If you're in a pinch for time to file, and the IRS owes you a refund, you can file for an extension free of charge, and this will give you until August 15, 2007 to file and collect your refund. But you gotta file SOMETHING by April 16 if you have income.

THE CORRECT ANSWER IS NO! You will not get penalized from the IRS for not filing by April 17 IF YOU ARE DUE A REFUND....no matter how many people say that you will! They need to know the laws before responding on here...lol!

You actually have up to 3 years to file a past return and claim your refund. They will not penalize you at all unless you do not file a tax return by the April 17 due date and you OWE the IRS money.

Officially and legally, yes you do. But since you have a refund coming, there won't be a penalty if you don't. But you might as well file now, so you get your refund sooner.

Thinker is right. Except, I did not file once and I got a letter stating that I must file to prove I don't owe.

I believe you only must file if you owe money. How would they penalize you on money THEY owe YOU?

By the way, nobody "owes" the IRS money- that's just the language they all want us to accept. It's really just the money they demand you pay with consequences if you don't. But nobody "owes" them- owes the for WHAT? You didn't ask them to do anything for you!

Gonna hate me.
Due date is the same. If you do not owe or have a refund and it arrives late YOU will be charged for your tardiness.
If you don't pay they charge you. If they don't pay because you didn't remind them they charge you.
