Car blows no smoke. Car is seviced regually. Have to top up oil before the 6 month service is due. Car isn't leaking oil as I'm whatching this like a hawk. Think I'm using oil that is 50w or similar.

1. Leaky oil seals. Evident by oil under engin
2. burnt out oil rings. Evident by smoke in exhaust.
3. Cheap oil. Evident by how much you paid for it. Find a good middle of the price range oil.

It's either dripping onto the ground or being burned by a worn out engine.

You should have been servicing the engine regularly, then it would still be in good condition, and would run ANOTHER 127K miles.

P.S.
A car can burn a lot of oil without smoking. When you see smoke, it is REALLY worn out, and you will get ticketed.

Leaking seals, Bad oil ring on the pistions, Bad seals on the valves. not using the correct weight of oil will also cause high oil consumption. most of the newer cars will use 5W-30 oil.

When the rings on the piston wear down, it allows oil to seep into the cyliner.....hence, old cars smoke when the oil burns, and uses more oil.

OR

You have an oil leak someplace.......

Unless you leave a cloud of smoke behind you or a puddle of oil everywhere you park, don't worry about it. Just keep doing what you are doing, checking it and topping it off as needed.
Still keep changing it and filter every 5 or 6K miles.
