I have a fairly lage oscar, about 6/7 inches mabey in a 75 gall. tank. His color is starting to fade a little. I saw this food at the store yesterday called "Hikari Cichild gold" It's supposed to restore color and have plenty of protien. My question is has anyone ever used this? And how did your fish respond?

I've used several types of Hikari foods and found them to be of excellent quality, although a little pricey. To help with the Oscar's color I would try Hikari first. Some of the other so-called color enhancing foods are hormone cocktails that can really mess-up your fish,I believe that Hikari is not one of these. As I recall the last Oscar I kept was fed Cichlid Gold almost exclusively and lived to be 14 or 15 years old. I think you are making a good choice.----Good luck.----PeeTee

I've used that food in the past and it's certainly up there with the better quality foods.

I highly recommend feeding him krill in addition to his regular food. He'll love it, and it's high in carotene which will help make his color a little more vivid.

Remember that good color can also be attributed to water quality, and also his color will fade or brighten depending on stress levels.

i feed that to my 5 inch oscar since i got him for christmas. oscars are picky and at first he wouldn't eat it, but after a day or so he at it and now he loves it! it is the best food for oscars. for an oscar that size you should feed him medium sized pellets. they say how big the pellets are at the bottem of the package. an oscar could be loosing color for a couple of reasons, but i think why yours is losing color is because it is still growing. this happens to my little guy too. when he stops growing his color will stay perminant.

I recommend that you test your pH. When our 8" Oscars turn color, our pH is usually low.
