They are trying to gulp air, because there is not enough water in the bucket for all those fish. (Technically, there is not enough air IN the water, that is.) You need to get them more room. Set up a couple more buckets and divide the fish among them, and change the water as frequently as you can to ensure that they can breathe. Good luck!!

They're probably coming to the top for air or because there's too much ammonia and nitrite in the water (which interferes with the amount of oxygen in the blood).
A 9 yr old goldfish should be pretty good sized. To keep 10 in one bucket, you should have an airstone if not a filter, and be doing frequent water changes to keep the amount of ammonia and nitrite down until they're ready to be moved. With the amount of wastes these fish produce, I've seen recommended to use 20 gallons for one and 10 more gallons for each fish after to keep them healthy.

It is very likely that they are coming up for air as 10 goldfish in a bucket will soon exhaust the oxygen in the water. Is there any way that you could run an airstone from a small pump and put that in with them. Also goldfish are quite heavy polluters so you will need to change the water frequently as they have no filter in the bucket.

with 10 of them they arent getting enough oxygen in that little bucket. I would aadvise you to put some type of aeretor in the bucket to circulate the water and replenish the ox.ygen

They would be better off in the bath there`s more room and they would have more oxygen
You still need to feed them but not so much you can also buy oxygenating tablets from a pet shop

bucket too small for them they need at least 4 pints per fish
i suggest you give your dad a hand and get the pond finished asap or you will start too loose them one by one as if they don't have enough room to live they commit suicide too make room for the others so be quick about it or get more buckets or a new tank

well what I would do is get a large rubbermaid(you can get 40 gallons) and put your filter from the tank in it and add an airstone, make sure you put the gravel in for a quick cycle

Theres not enough air for them, they need air bubbles or some kind of circulation.

They might also be coming up because that's where the light is.
If it is air, most good petstores will supply oxygen tablets fairly cheap (something like 99p for 25) which will help.
That is, if plants are not an option.
