Here's the problem. In the UK a student will finish Secondary School (which I think is our equivalent to High School) with suitable examination grades that will enable them to attend a University as an undergraduate in order to obtain a degree (BA Hons or Bsc Hons), thereby becoming a Graduate; certain colleges can award degrees but only if they have university status or are affilliated to a university that awards degrees.

What is the process in America? I have found myself becoming confused with Students who 'graduate' from High School, but then you have 'Graduate Schools' , students who 'graduate from College' and of course Universities themselves.

My daughter wishes to obtain a degree in America but we are not sure what route it is we take, Help!

First, there is no problem for a Brit with good secondary school credentials coming to the USA for school. There are many tens of thousands of international students in the USA.

Second, there are over 4000 degree granting colleges in the USA. There are some issues about accreditation of some of these schools. You can avoid worrying about the accreditation by narrowing your choice of schools. A good system for picking out a college in the USA would be the college search programs on the sites of collegeboard.com and princetonreview.com. These are very reliable.

You should decide which part of the USA you want to visit, and what disciplines you want to study. The college search programs will allow you to locate 30 or 40 schools which generally fit your criteria. You can decide which school to attend by matching the SAT scores of the incoming class (usually shown onthe college's website) to your scores.

The US News magazine has a famous college ranking which it issues each year. Any school in their top 100 ranking of national universities, or top liberal arts schools or top regional schools, would be very respectable and reliable. Many of the schools in the second or third tier are also respectable but they do not have the resources of the higher ranked schools.

You should pick out a few schools that seem interesting, and write directly to their admissions offices. The admissions people are used to dealing with international students and can explain the applications process to you. Most good US high school students finish their 12th year of education with a high school diploma, apply during their last year of secondary school to about 3 - 9 different colleges, and are accepted to 4 or 5, then they must choose which they will attend. In theory they will graduate from college/university with a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in four years, although many take longer to complete the degree. After the BA or BS students often begin work but return to school part-time or after a gap to complete a MS or MA - the Master's degree takes 2 years or more to complete, depending on the rigor and discipline of the course.

Good luck!

High school gives Diplomas for graduation. Most 4 year Colleges and Universities can give Associates degrees (2 yr degree) or Bachelors degrees (4 yr degree). Graduate schools are for higher degrees such as Masters and Doctorates (usually gotten after a bachelors). Most bacheloriate schools are residential. Many associate schools are not. State Universities offer the widest variety of choices for majors and degrees. If you (and your daughter) are unsure, start with them until you get a bit more comfortable in the US mindset. You may also want to obtain the help of an American to help translate some of the confusing information. I would be willing to assist if you would like.
