The greatest cricket player or greatest batsman? There's a difference. Yes all of these guys are good. But of the 3 only Ponting is in good form.
I would say if each of these played at their best I would top Sachin just over Lara. Ponting has had a good year or so but its about time.
The cricketer in the world is Jacques Kallis. He hasn't made 400 like Lara or bats aggresively like Ponting, but he has technique like no one else. He bats on a different level than the best in the world.
Mentally he is very strong and handles pressure exceptionally well. He always gets some runs no matter what the situation.
I would call him the best cricketer in the world because he is an allrounder. He has been in the top5 allrounders for the last few years and has not played inconsistently like the others you have mentioned. Throughout his career he has been dependable and very stable.
He truly is the best cricketer in the world.
The best bowlers would be between Pollock and McGrath. Both have mastered the art of perfect line and length.

In cricket there are mainly 2 departments, which are batting and bowling. Both are most integral part of the cricket. Under the circumstances when you say the greatest cricketer, you must specify as to whether greatest batsman or greatest bowler to get a correcrt assessment.
If you consider the records, Sachin Tendulkar is the greatest batsman in the world of cricket today. However, due to his indifferent form in the recent past, he can no more considered as the greatest batsman and presently Ricky Ponting is the greatest batsman.
As far as greatest bowler is concerned, I am of the opinion that M. Muralitharan of Sri Lanka is the greatest bowler

It's kind of amazing that we invariably confine our 'greatest cricketer horizons' only to batsmen. Bradman, sobers, Gavaskar, Richards, Lara, Tendulkar, Ponting..... Hey where are the Andy Roberts, Hadlees, Mcgraths, Murlidharans and Warnes ? Where are the complete packages. The Flemings,Kallis', Gilchrists, Kapils, Imrans & the Bothams ? Why just the runs scored ? Why not the runs saved, the wickets saved, the leadership, the influence, the motivation....Then who IS the Greatest ?

Ricky Ponting because the way he is captaining his team is amazing. If any another team lost consecutive matches and entered the world cup like Australia, no captain can handle the situation like Ponting, He is the backbone of Australia.
