The cheapest way to get a loud "Broom" noise is to take out the back box....I had a week where my car was without the backbox, and it sounded pretty good, a very N1 alike sound.

Just changing the air flter wont give you much of the sound that u want. Mostly as the engine noise will already cover the sound that the changed filter will make.

If you really wanted to get a bit DIY to get your desired sound, what you could do is to drill holes in your original air box (not the actual filter). Doing so you will get an inmporvement in the sound and also you can still get the protection of filtering debris out of the engine.

If you want to hear the sucking sound of air running into the engine, then go ahead. The best way would be to get a low restriction exhaust or both.

first off your friend sounds like a nutter
second, invest in a K&N air filter it has a lifetime guarantee
it will allow your car to breath with less effort than normal.
you will need to clean it every time you get serviced or have it cleaned by the shop
make sure they know you have a non disposable air filter when you take it in.

No , it's not. take the air filter out completely and see what you get.. No change,, it's all in the muffler,, get a flow master and you get the sound, you don't need the whole exhaust,,, just the muffler, any decent shop can weld it inm at a cost of about 200 out the door $ that is.
