As far as this question is considered i to will be of surabhis opinioin . Being a mutant is not all that fun , u know . Besides when you are born normal u cannot become a mutant later on!!
Mutations in our body occur during the foetal development . You must have heard of genes and chromosomes. Humans contain 23 pairs of such chromosomes in their genetic make up. When our dna/rna replicate these are copied in a very accurate manner by processes called translation and transcription.Various factors in our bodies ensure the accuracy of this processe s.However sometimes errors are introduced . even a minor change can lead to drastic changes.such changes arecalled mutations.
Unlike how you would see in X-men and stuff on TV mutations cannot give you extraordinary powers , atleast till now no such case has occureed.they are mostly unpleasent and affected individuals donot have a long life .Mutations are mainly of 2 types -
FRAME-SHIF and SUBSTITUTION mutations..albinism, bleeder's disease{heamophilia} are some common mutations.
To prevent such disasters care should be taken during the first 3 months of pregnancy. In this period exposure of the pregnant women to harmful ionising radiations , infection by disese like german measels etc can have disatrous effects on the foetus. These agents are called "tetratogens" i.e monster forming

Listen are you nuts? Be happy with what you are don't expect for more, but still if you want more, jump into a nuclear waste bin, force a radio active spider to bite yourself. If still nothing happens except that you can't be a mutant.

It is in your DNA...or not.
Becoming one will need some serious radiation poisoning and I can guarantee you that WILL affect your appearance...in a bad way.
A mutant means just you have something that your species normally does not have. If you are looking for superpowers...er.. change you name to Peter Parker and hope for the best.
