The basic difference between the two is while "states of unity" defines various levels of unity, "states in unity" defines an attainment of a level of unity. In other words, while states in unity is specific and situational, states of unity is more conceptual and descriptive of ideals.

'States in unity' is not various states that unity can have... it is rather the states of the various parts that are in unity. States of unity are obviously the various states of the unity itself.
