isI might take a slightly different approach to this... I would suggest White Clouds. They are very tolerant of mistakes and unintentional abuse, they are colorful and active relatively small and low cost. If provided with some inexpensive plants such as water lettuce and elodea they will spawn nearly continuously and fill the tank in fairly short order so that the occasional loses due to age etc and not a hard blow and don't leave the tank looking empty. Coupled with a few cory cats for the bottom it would be a colorful and active tank.

Is it a 40gal breeder? because the measurements you provide are for a kinda short 120gal tank? distinction. clear out? perfect option is a canister for larger tanks like that. What fish? What do you want? some persons ought to plant it and throw 100 neons in there and experience free. Others ought to like a pair of Oscars. Or some thing in between? that's assuming the 4 x 2 x 2 is real. no matter if it really is a 40gal breeder, then 40 neons OR a pair of Firemouths, or some thing in between. Ian

If you really want something nice for a 50 gallon, that doesn't cost much, lives long and gives lots of "viewing pleasure" it can only be a school of Danios.
A 50 is 36x18x18. I want to make certain this is the tank we're talking about. 50's are great for their fairly large surface area.
A 55 would include Giant Danios, but that is because it is 48x13x20.

I like "quality" zebra danios (Danio rerio), which are hard to find.
I was raising pearl danios (Danio albolineatus) in the 1990's, but for the past few years, I've stopped, because they were weak stock and too inbred, the problem with many fish from the pet store that are "farm raised" rather than wild caught.

i agree w/ everybody above i've had/currently have most of the breeds mentioned and have had a lot of luck w/ a tropical tank, opaline gouramis and others that look like it that are different colors and such can get pretty big my opaline gourami got to be like 6 in at least but they are really pretty when they are calm. you can also put in 1! and only 1 betta in a tropical tank they are not that aggressive by them selves and they will really swim around b/c when they are in a little vase they just sit there.

Goldfish (either fantail or single tail) is out because it can grow big. With your criteria, I recommend albino sailfin molly, dwarf gourami or long-fin rosy barb. They are really colorful. Platy is OK too although each individual is not that colorful but when there are a few they will look colorful. There are many color varities for platy that you keep you busy collecting. Guppy although colorful but they have short lifespan, which outta of your criterion.

How about some Moors, or Shabunkins or even some Orandas? All these fish will do well in cold water tanks. Hopefully this will help with your decision.

there is not alot of choice when it comes to fresh water fish apart from gold fish, blackmoors and guppys,i would say tropical fish are no more expensive and can have a really good variety just need a heater.get little sharks, neons, angel fish, dano's,tetras, tiger barbs, red top zebras, labrinth, cat fish etc they are really pretty and much more better than cold water.xxx

For the best advice go to your local Aquarium stockist and ask them, that's what they are there for. It doesn't cost anything to ask or to browse. Hope you find something you like.
