Illiteracy happens because of neglect. Neglect by parents & teachers. We can stop it by paying attention to our kids. Help them if they're struggling. Give them hope. Make them enthusiastic about learning to read. Instill in them positive habits that they will carry with them throughout their lives. People need to be more active in their children's lives. If you catch a problem early, then it's easier to solve. I am amazed that there are adults who are unable to read. I marvel that they are able to function in society without it. It must be very frightening to keep such a secret. Even for them it is never too late to learn. They need to reach out for help. There are people who can help.
We can't let people slip through the cracks. Everyone is important.

Why is it such a problem? I think it is more important to stop violence, indiference and other problems of this type!! In the past there were more illiterates than today and I don't think things were worst!! Look for example at people living in the countryside, many of them are not educated but have better manners and a better understanding of God than many other "educated" people!!

Encourage people to visit their library more often.
But really, spelling a few words wrong here or there isn't the be all and end all - people need to chill out a bit

By teaching those who cannot read how to read, write, and spell - we can hopefully reduce, if not eliminate illiteracy.
