# Manufacturing overhead (also referred to as factory overhead, factory burden, and manufacturing support costs) refers to indirect factory-related costs that are incurred when a product is manufactured. Along with costs such as direct material and direct labor, the cost of manufacturing overhead must be assigned to each unit produced so that Inventory and Cost of Goods Sold are valued and reported according to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
Manufacturing overhead includes such things as the electricity used to operate the factory equipment, depreciation on the factory equipment and building, factory supplies and factory personnel (other than direct labor). How these costs are assigned to products has in impact on the measurement of an individual product's profitability.

overhead, to explain simply, is the cost that you incur with or without sales or production.
for example, rent is a overhead cost.
we are renting out a factory as of the moment and with or without production we still need to pay the rent.
basic wages for the employees are another example.
internet business have little or no overhead cost. i guess paying for web hosting is an overhead and paying for a domain name but after that your site runs 24-7.
i hope this helps.

In a business, it is costs associated with doing business.
Rent, light, heat, etc are all considered overhead. So is clerical help, phone, etc. Things that cost money, but you can't do without.
Hope this helps.

Would you by any chance be taking an open-book Cost Accounting exam? You have a few questions posted that look like you're not prepared to answer them.
