Well, even though there aren't many rules to holding a pick, here are a few ways to maximize it for speed- Hold it as close to the tip as you can without having your thumb hit the strings. If you hold too much of the pick out, it can "catch" on the strings and slow you down.
Also try to make the pick at a ninety degree angle from the strings, not your thumb.A lot of people hold their thumb at a slight angle while playing and therefore hit the string with more of the side of the pick then they should.
As for speed, well speed is really more about cleanliness than anything.Take a part of the song that is played fast, and play it at your max speed that still sounds clean. Now play it again and again, slowly increasing tempo until you hit the spot where your notes turn to crap.Pick out the specific notes that you didn't hit correctly and it will probably come down to simply not picking cleanly or that your hands are at two different spots at that point. Either way your going to have to slow down again, but this time you have an idea of whats keeping you from being faster. It does take a long time and lots of repetitive riffing to get things fast though. Hope that helps

Don't play faster than you can, but rather as fast as you can without slurring or missing notes. Positioning the pick and resting the hand and fingers are key. Watch other guitarists, and get together with other guitar players and jam 1 on 1. It takes time to develope technique and differs from person to person due to the physique of your wrists, hands and fingers. Practic, practice, practice..............and good Luck!

No way man! Herman Li from Dragonforce would blow that guy away. I mean, video game noises and speeding up your music are so totally in these days. (Sarcasm) To be honest, I don't care how fast someone can play. Just like I said, Dragonforce has supposedly fast music, but I think their music is crap. Faster doesn't always mean better. Like take Tool for example since you and me like that band. They don't play super fast, but they have originality in their music. Besides if that guy can play that fast, then why isn't he signed with a record label anyway? EDIT: Thanks satchjr2.

OK what you gotta do is not move your arm, just your wrist, with practice you can get real fast. or as a sucky short cut, if you press the pick against the neck on an electric you can play a little faster

It's time for school dude, make efforts to find video on Chet Atkins and Eddie Van Halen. Also worth checking out video on Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen.

Watch how these guys handle their rigs onstage. Somewhere, you'll find your own comfy groove to do the same things they do.....which comes from HOURS on end of pratice.

Good luck....now get busy!!!
