Is it essential to affix photo in resume?

Good question.

A person I met attached a "before and after"
picture of a project he completed for a landscaping position.

Unless you are a model or an actor, or in some kind of profession where appearance is a primary part of the job, that would be very unusual.

and by law it can not be required in a first stage interview.

only once you have agreed to a background check can they ask for any identification retention (copy of drivers license)

you also do not have to list your age, gender, sexual preference, marital status, or parental status

Some employers require your social to apply for a job, and they do have the right to that information to verify your work-status (legal residency status)
