The versatility and creativity in the mainstream arena is not there for the most part. The business aspect has taken over a lot of it, which is the case for a lot of genres, but I think it's even more disappointing for hip hop. To me, it started out as an outlet for people to tell the story of a community where they were not given much; it was used as a tool for change. And while I don't think everyone HAS to be rapping about social justice, it has definitely taken the form of something I'm not very fond of. Many rappers say things just because it's what the next guy is saying...talking about killing people and b's (and all kinds of inappropriate mess my future kids WILL NOT listen to) and all this nonsense and how "real they are and how tough the life is that they lead" but then whenever it's convenient they cry "it's just entertainment." There's not a lot of truth to what is out right now. People just want their money...
And occasionally I don't mind a silly song about soup every now and then if the beat is on point, it's just that when that becomes the standard...well umm...yeah something's got to change.

Hip Hop is now viewed as juvenile, clinging onto fashion/social trends that were long old and tired 12 years ago. And the music audiences are backed up solid by major record labels, who have the hard bottom line sales results to prove Hip Hop is dying--fast--as also it's angry embittered cousin, Rap is seeing it's demise as well.
If the $$$$ ain't there any more, it gets dumped by the major record lables fast like a hot potato. Nothing personal---it's just show biz.
So, what's ahead for the urban genre of music? A retro-return of Motown or Funk.....or classy jazzy R & B??? Hard to say, but come 2008....or sooner....the scene ought to get real interesting. But the party for Hip Hop and Rap is over.

because people prefer style over substance. not the fact that it's mainstream or because white people like it. no specific genre of music is for a certain race thats just a load or crap. ok back to the topic. hip hop is dead because you don't have to have talent anymore to become famous. look at all the crap out now and all the crap that has been coming out. the south is the main reason however hip hop is dead. i've been listening to hip hop for about 17 years now. yes the music has gotten significantly worse, only thing that improved are beats and sound quality but that's because of technology. hip hop is dead because the heads of all major labels killed it, artists can no longer rap about real social issues, or anything all they rap about now is jewelry and degrading women, horrible. you can't be a real rapper and be taken seriously, nowadays you need a gimmick or you have to be really ignorant.

my friend did a report on this
hip hop is dead because all the rappers are rapping about materialistic things, girls, money, cars, booty shakin and dances. the old school hip hop was about surving the hood, struggles of street life and making it to the top and had a lot more meaning than the hip hop of today. making a generilization of hip hop is basicaly a music genre but the sturggles behind it and the real music that started it all are basically dead so people say that hip hop is dead.

I never cared for Hip Hop that much, it's almost a joke...because some artists always say they pour there heart and soul into the music, but if you ready there lyrics...doesn't seem like that much heart and soul, I'm not saying ALL hip hop is like that, but a lot of it is, I don't think it's dead though.

hip hop can never die. it's just at the point where it is recycling itself without much new innovation. but the hip hop will never die as long as there is struggle in the black man's life. as long as new producers and rappers bring out new heat.
