basically anymore when a car company puts out a convertible they take a stock car and send it to a customizer. they usually do a bunch at a time. so the answer is you could get your car convertableized but it would probably not be worth it. good luck

Probably, but it will likely not be very safe if you ever roll over, and it costs $$$.

Real convertibles are engineered so that the roll bar is a part of the main structure and the windshield brace and roll bar is enough to support the weight of the car so that if you do flip over, your head won't get crushed. (And don't say it won't happen, Reader's Digest latest issue w/ 100 Best America on cover profiled a guy who broke his neck as passenger when his friend, driving a convertible w/ top down, took an offramp too fast and went off the road, flipping the car. And that was a purpose-built convertible. He survived... but lost control of both legs, and it took months for his arms and hand to work again. However, he was 6 foot 1. Still, if your car's upside down and scrunched it doesn't matter if you are 4 foot 6. You'll still getting squashed.

So to convert it PROPERLY you need rollbars and windshield brace stiffening, and that is NOT CHEAP. Not to mention where will the rear hatch and the folded top go.

Consider a T-top / Targa-top instead.

The closest Ive heard of is a targa top. The guy has to replace the windshield pretty regularly. It is very difficult to strengthen the car enough to make it able to handle the conv't top, especially when youd be the first to do it. In an already 3k lb car that is probably a bad idea.

It is possible, but probably not worth it due to enormous expense and weight gain

Google New Edge Cougar Convertible. There is a picture of one floating around. Mercury faked the picture as a promo.

Probably not. It would cost a TON of money. The cougar looked nice, but it was already a heavy car to begin with. Custom chopping a top requires adding a lot of extra support to the body of the car. This adds weight and nevertheless reduces the life of the car frame.

could you, yes. would it be safe, NO. theres a ton more structure put into cars that are going to be made into convertibles that just isn't in the cougar.

i have a 99 cougar and was thinking about this the other day, i kinda think the cougar would look weird as a convertible though...just me...

Anytime you remove a hard top, you must first reinforce the frame - especially in the case of a unit body. The top is a structural component of the whole body which helps to make it somewhat rigid. That would certainly be a unique vehicle when you finish.
