I have a 1989 Chevy S-10 Pickup with a 2.8L engine. I bought new. Here is my problem. After the truck was 2 or 3 years old I needed a new muffler and that lasted for 8 or 9 years. Now here is the problem. In March 2000 I need another muffler so I went to Midas and they put one on. Then in May 2001 I needed to replace that one and another one in Dec. 2004, March 2005, Nov. 2005 and the latest April 2007. I had a tune up sometime last year which the truck wasn't missing.

Midas told me that my truck was missing and back firing and if the muffler fails again they will NOT honor it. My question is this. Is there something wrong with my truck that is making the mufflers go out so fast or are they selling cheap mufflers?

I have a appointment to take my truck in for diagnostic check up this monday.

i suspect cheap mufflers. i put a new one on my ranger every year or 2. it's a 92 and it's has 8 or 9 mufflers on it. according to your question some of your mufflers lasted for years.

S-10s have a bad rep for clogging catalytic converters, not mufflers. They seem to clog at the drop of a hat. Especially with a badly tuned engine. Bad Tune = more carbon = Clogged Cat.

Best thing to do is have them mount it so it is removable (and not weld it). Be prepared every year or two to replace it.

And yes, a badly tuned car will void a cat's warranty because it will 'carbon up' the cat.

"Midas told me that my truck was missing and back firing and if the muffler fails again they will NOT honor it. "

IS your vehicle back-firing?
Do you hear it?
Do you hear it that you feel it may be loud enough to warp the muffler?
Why did you replace the muffler in May 2001?

I was under the impression that Midas installed life time warranty.

Sounds like some bad mechanics at Midas. Have you ever burned out a catylatic converter? Backfiring would bave burned out your catylatic converter as well if it is burning out your mufflers.

They gave you the answer , Your engine is destroying the mufflers by back firing which blows the insides loose and deforms the shell.

I'd look for a second opinion, they are most likely using cheap mufflers
