What do I need to do to correct my last name on my tax return I already filled?
I put down my husband's name, but I actually use my maiden name on other legal documents.
Can I simply call IRS?

The IRS will disallow the Filing Status for Joint and your exemption on the return if the name on the return and the same shown on SSA records do not match, You first need to contact the SSA to verify what name they are showing, and apply for the change, you can then call the IRS and they can make an adjustment to the account reverting back to the Joint Filing Status and giving back your exemption. They should send a letter out to you notifying you of the changes made to the original return and advising you what the changes were.

Call the Accounts area of the IRS at 1-800-829-0922

The name on your return needs to match the name on your social security card regardless of what name you use for other business matters. If it doesn't and you e-filed, your return will be rejected by the IRS and you can correct it and resubmit it. Otherwise, contact the IRS to find out what you need to do.

Your name on your tax return should be whatever is on your social security card. If yo didn't do that, uou could try calling, but it will very likely just be rejected and you'll have to refile it.
