You need to be very careful before you do something like that. You really don't know who you are giving a ride to.
I do it sometimes but as a retired policeman I can carry a weapon and they would have a hard time trying something on me.. But I would tell my daughters not to.

Depends... is your brother stronger, bigger and more able to control the stranger.... then yes, your mother was right to offer the assistance of your bother to a woman who was trying to escape a violent situation.... but would I suggest you pick up some strange person that could get the upper hand on you in a volatile situation, no. Every case is different, and in this example your mother/brother did the right thing.... you just have to be a good judge of people.

my boyfriend was bieng nice one day and asked this old guy that was walking in the rain if he needed a ride and the guy was like sure.... he asked my bf if he could put his stuff in the back, and what his "stuff" was , was ballons and a tigger backpack. when my bf asked him what they were needed for the guy simply replied "You never know when you are going to come across a little girl or a small child."....creepy, too late now, he was already in the car.. later he wanted to take my bf to a warehouse, but my bf didnt go..
everything turned out okay, but he said he wont be picking up any body else anymore

It was very kind of your mum and brother to help her out, though I would never give a stranger a ride in my car. I would probably call a taxi for them instead.
