So my family is very old fashioned and they are strong believers in graduating college 1st, then getting married 2nd, and having children last. Well I have one year left in college and no kids but my boyfriend of 4 years and I just want to be married. He's a full time blue collar worker and a home owner so he is very capable of supporting me while I'm in school. I'm 22 and he is 25 so we're old enough to be married. To save money and not ask for help, we want to get married on a cruise ship this August, but I know my family won't approve so any suggestions on how I should approach this?

Just do it! You only live once!

They will be upset, and have good reason. If you two have been able to stay together this long without the piece of paper, what's the hurry? One more year, your finishing school, should not be too difficult to wait for a lifelong commitment. Your ages do play a factor, but there are so many other things besides age, home ownership, and one having a job to base a lasting marriage on also. Being mature enough to make wise decisions regarding your future for the better shows if the relationship will last.

What's the rush? Finish college. It won't kill you. Your bf can wait a year. Get engaged now and plan a wedding for after graduation. You can save money and have something nicer, too, if you wait a year. You will be so happy you stuck it out and got a degree, your parents will be happy, and I bet you find yourself giving the same advice to your kids. Even if your husband is very understanding, it will be SO HARD to finish college once you're married. People who have college degrees make much more money than those who don't, like a million dollars more over their lifetimes, so stick it out and finish it. If your bf loves you, he'll wait.

I personally would like for you to wait. If your heart is so content into marrying him now, just go on the cuise ship and get married! After the graduation get married again with your family.

God Bless

If it were me, I'd just tell them and do it. I mean you are adults and should be making your own decisions. The other day my mom was trying to force me to do something for her (more like manipulate) and you know what? I'm an adult and not her little girl anymore. My life is connected to hers because she is my mom not because the final say comes from her anymore. Sorry...this advise kinda sucks but that is what I would do. Be polite and straight forward.
