Army Medic here. The single most important you can do for muscle pain... STRETCH! Stretch your back out often. Whenever you've got a quick second, just do a couple 15 second reps, and go one with your way. It'll inflame for the moment immediately after you do it, but trust me, if you start at the beginning of the day, you'll start to notice the results by noon. I've ruck marched with excesses of 80lbs. And I've had more than just my own back to worry about. Stretching and heat application will work wonders above any meds (except for the tremadol, haha. Good luck getting that, though).

I have a bad spine with 8 compression fractures and 4 bulging disks in my upper spine as well. So feeling no pain would be a blessing about now.

maybe your having so much pain in both areas, lower and upper, that you are actually feeling no pain now at all.

fell out of a tree in the Army...been in continual low back pain ever since...hospitalized twice for bulging discs...
