I can't beleive that people are using the if they can say it why cant we say it excuse for Imus. We tell our kids that there are things parents can talk about and there are words they hear on tv ,we ask them not to repeat or call them adult words. There are pet names we call our lovers that if someone else said them we would be offended.Take your wife,You may call her honey. If another man calls your wife honey most men would want to fight or at last have a sense of "that 's not appropriate". I might say my child stinks at t-ball but that doesnt give you the right to bash my child. nana's pot pie might taste like dirt but that's still my nana. It's not the words thmeselves but the somewhat hateful or elitist way there used sometimers that offends. I have some white friends that call me boy in a friendly way I others in a way that made me feel hate. Yes, some rappers offend me some are good , I can call my cousin a nappy head whatever but the saying u dont know me like that means ?

I'm not sure it can be all that simple.

I would rather the offensive language used by rappers and people like Imus went away to some private place where I don't have to contend with it, but that's probably too much to expect of a society which spends more time watching television than reading books.

What makes Imus offense particularly bad was the fact it was directed at people who didn't deserve public criticism for their appearance and implications of conduct which Imus could not have known anything about if they indeed had existed.

Innocent people never deserve to be attacked the way Imus spoke about those young women. But I'd also rather not be exposed to the sexual and violence-laden terms used by rappers and on television and in movies.

I can choose not to listen to those, and I can turn my television set off, which I generally do.

What you call your friends, children and relatives in private is your business and theirs. What I call you is your business and what you call me or mine is my business. But some words should not be used in public.

So I guess I pretty much agree with you.

But I would argue in favor of all of us speaking in a more dignified way and teaching those we love more dignity. And I don't see how we can do that if we use terms we all agree disparage to describe people we love.

interesting enough, I have been asking many times the question "why are black people not considered racist?" example: I am dating a black guy but for the first 6 months we were having problems because the black girls hated me...hmmm...what did I do? nothing except show respect...well I think they are racist,

I dont care about the history, I care about respect. I respect you you should respect me...what someone that i dont know did, i dont care...however they are excused to discriminate against me because of the past...I call all those people racist and any excuse bullshit...

if you dont want to be called a name, dont use it...I think is shameful of those girls using this to go to Oprahs show, they are all using this to gain for themself...i have no respect for anyone that uses such thing to gain personal fame...

yes, when you use certain words around kids they would repeat, so why flip when the kid uses a word that white people cant use (i think everyone knows what i mean)...every rap song uses the n word, but white kids listen to those songs, so what happens when a 6 yr old kid uses it...

I think we should all avoid using certain words, forget about the past and love each other just for who we are...

I totally understand what you are saying. And I mostly agree. The examples you have put forth are when you are familiar with people and makes perfect sense, I agree. But when it comes to rappers, yes, they should police themselves. The do as I say not as I do doesn't work.
