To put it simply, they reseed after the first round.
It's not like the NBA, where the brackets are set when the playoffs begin.
In the second round, the top-seeded winner in each conference plays the lowest-seeded winner, and the other two teams play as well. Then the winners meet, with the higher seed getting home-ice advantage.

the best team (or highest ranked) always plays the lowest ranked team. so for example: if the redwings were to move into the next round, and so did the wild, they would play eachother because the wings are 1, and the wild is 7. the best team the #1 seed could play would be the #4(and that would only happen if all the teams that are "supposed" to win, win). the same happens with the 2nd seeded team, who (if the advace) plays the second lowest team.
i hope that wasnt too confusing.

The formula is as follows:
The Gross National Product of the country the team plays in (but not the country the owner resides in) MINUS (-) the average age of the players on the team MINUS (-) the age of the team's captain squared PLUS (+) the number of inhabitants of the metropolitan area of the teams' farm club.
Do this formula for all the teams remaining after the first round.
Whoever has the HIGHEST number plays the LOWEST number. The two middle teams play eachother.
I'd go into detail about the formula for the 3rd round, but it's slightly confusing...not nearly as easy to determine as this one.
