I have to build a soap box car to race around the campus for my physics class. The conditions are that I have to power it, and it has to have a shell. My class is the first class to do the project so there isn't much examples or ideas provided. Though it was suggested that we could use petels to power it? So any ideas, and how would I be able to steer it as there will be corners to go around? Plans are welcome too, though I figured that this project will probally be a test as you go type of thing.
Thanks for any help!

Will this be a race or just get it around the campus? If it is a race then try some recombent type of device. Like a rack and pinion type which would allow you to use more leg power to the wheels. Steering, could be as simple as a pivot point with ropes on it wrapped around a broom handle and a steering wheel to turn the pole..

That sounds like a lot of fun. Unfortunately, it would take me longer to explain the details than it would to build the car for you. The easiest thing to do would be to go all Flinstones on it with swiveling casters in the front. Not very high tech, but it'd work, kind of...

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

To get some better ideas on steering, look carefully at a few go-cart pictures. Also try to find an old bike somewhere that you can chop up for parts, if you want to pedal it. I really hope you have access to a welding machine. You're going to need one.

Try the link below, the 'triker' looked kind of groovy.
Also on the market are hand powered wheelchairy doobries.
You get land yachts aswell.

Search 'go kart' for yourself, and use your imagination.

Self powered? Can you put bike pedals on it? so the driver just pedals and the car goes?
