The traditional answer was the wheel, but I think it should be updated--I think the most groundbreaking invention now has been the computer.

The Guttenberg printing press (1445) made it possible for mass dissemination of knowledge.

Books could now be printed en masse and no longer had to be handwritten.

On September 30, 1452, Johann Guttenberg's Bible was published becoming the first book to be published in volume.

Without the ability to transfer what is learned we would be sitting in caves waiting for lightning to strike in order to have fire...

The ability for the first person with fire to tell the next human what he learned.
