Yes, I have always chewed off my fingernails. I've been getting a lot better now, but sometimes I don't even know I'm doing it and by the time I catch myself, its too late. You can tell I've chewed them too much because 2 of my fingernails are actually growing in the wrong direction now. Instead of growing out straight, they grow out crooked.
I also chew off the cuticles, which is really bad. Here's a quick story to explain how badly I chew my cuticles-- I spilled boiling water on one of my hands, so I had to go to the doctors. There was a huge bubble on the top of my hand that had to be bandaged. As he was wrapping it, he pointed to my thumb and said "Oh, you got your thumb too" I had to tell him that my thumb wasn't red because of the boiling water, it is always red around the nail because I chewed it one too many times. Boy was that embarrassing.
But seriously, I have been getting A LOT better!!!!!
Am I the only fingernail chewer out there that has screwed up the growth of the nail???

when I was young I chewed, now That I am old I bite them off. Now here is a little food for thought. A former girlfriend back about 13 years ago hated my biting my nails and bet me to not bite or chew them for 30 days... She claims it will be a habit of not biting them. In theory I suppose she could be right but midnight that night of the 30th day I asked if I won , she claimed yes and I bite off all my finger nails right in front of her. LOL you can't teach an old dog new habits.

When I was a child, the home was not a happy place. We never knew who was going to be living on the farm from one day to the next. My Dad's parents lived there and they hated me. His mother was exceptionally cruel toward me. I bit my nails to the quick. My Dad put horse liniment on my fingers to make me stop. After a while it was just habit; that was many years ago. My nails grow very fast and I cut them down. I think as a child my nerves were bad. If it weren't for my loving Mom {step} things would have been a lot worse. As an adult, I wonder how I could have chewed my nails. YUCKY!!!!!!

I cut them off with my other fingernails, and it isn't pretty or long like other people's.
My middle and ring fingers, and pinkies have the straightest ones.
Index is just like other people's and thumb is in between the straight and curved.

I did until I had my first son, having a baby broke me of putting my fingers in my mouth and touching my face, immediately, and I wash my hands like I'm OCD, but I smoke twice as much. Oh, my first son is 24 now, and I'm still a germaphobe.
