Every now and then some feminists comes up with a complaint that women are discriminated against because there is an increase in women living in poverty:

FEMINIZATION OF POVERTY
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feminization_of_poverty

"The feminization of poverty is a phenomenon that has been observed in the United States since 1970 as female headed households accounted for a growing proportion of those below the poverty line. A large majority of these women are divorced or never-married mothers."

So..? Feminism has always been about WOMEN'S INDEPENDENCE. Okay so you're independent now so you got what you wanted who cares if you're poor as a result of your own decisions?

I suppose we are to rectify this by giving you money for no apparent reason? Sounds dependent on the handouts (from men) to me... Why do feminists think handouts for no reciprocal service is the definition of "independence"?

Here's the proof feminism is to blame:

"The feminization of poverty is a phenomenon that has been observed in the United States since 1970 AS FEMALE HEADED HOUSEHOLDS accounted for a growing proportion of those below the poverty line. A large majority of these women are DIVORCED OR NEVER-MARRIED MOTHERS."

Single mothers?
Divorced women?

Feminism.

Why?
Because it works to put women on the receiving end and men (and honest women) on the paying end.
It is socialism at it's core, not assistance but a way of life.
As in all of feminism, the credo is "women get, men give".

I am amazed how brainwashed the feminists answering are that they actually believe you are wrong. Just as when a woman makes a conscious decision to create a single-mother-headed household, feminists blame men. (and due to the plethora of contraception, abortion, abandonment, child support and adoption, it IS a conscious decision to intentionally create these single parent households, often the man is unaware when a pregnancy occurs and even if he is aware, is legally and politically impotent to make ANY decisions, including the one to be an equal parent to the child.
Feminists have made sure to implement laws so that men can be forced out of their children's lives and then turn around an blame him for being kicked out all the while demanding societal support via WIC, food stamps, child support... all the 77 different programs aimed primarily at women who made the conscious decision to have children then deny the father equal rights regarding those children.
Then they have the brass to complain when they get what they demanded. It's called the "law of unintended consequences" whereby the result rarely reflects the desired change. In this case, feminists thought by removing men from the family and forcing him to pay for it, everything would be 'peachy-keen'. The reality is that it just didn't quite work out that way and the feminist dream of socialism is a huge drain on the economy of the nation.

It is ridiculous for you to assume that the feminist movement and the feminization of poverty are related. The reason for the feminization of poverty is because women are still behind on important factors such as education and salary compared to men. When women don't have equal access to good paying jobs, which still happens every day, then it is impossible to be equal. The other part of the problem is that when two teenagers have a baby the mother is more likely to stick around. Having a child really decreases the ability for a good education and therefore a good job. If all men had to take care of children born outside of marriage and therefore couldn't get the education needed for a good job than there wouldn't be feminitization of poverty. For the sake of those men out there who aren't ignorant misogynists, please do a little more research before you start spouting off about a topic you found on the internet.

Wikepedia isn't the best place to look for answers for starters... here's a better one

"Women living in poverty are often denied access to critical resources such as credit, land and inheritance. Their labour goes unrewarded and unrecognized. Their health care and nutritional needs are not given priority, they lack sufficient access to education and support services, and their participation in decision-making at home and in the community are minimal. Caught in the cycle of poverty, women lack access to resources and services to change their situation."

That doesn't mean there aren't men in the same situation as mentioned above, however there ARE some places in the world where this is far more prevalent for women than men and having been one of those women described above, it's tough to keep your head above water knowing that those doors aren't open for you.

Feminism defined is the social, political and economical equality of the sexes, not about women's independece

No one is asking you for your so called handouts. Feminists don't run around saying all women should be given money for reciprocal service. Feminists say women should have equal opportunity.

Take your money that you think you should give me and get a clue. It might do you some good

I was going to answer your question.....but you don't want answers you want other women haters to agree with you.......but I don't care for your nasty comments of how I should be shot....so again I will just say that its my belief that you hate women and I actually feel very sorry for you.....ignorance is not always bliss.......but if yours is enjoy it while you can

Phil....may I ask how child support is equal to WIC and food stamps....child support is what a non-custodial parent pays towards the upkeep of his or her children.....it is usually the case that when the parent ordered to pay support doesn't that the need for WIC and food stamps comes into effect.....

This woman says your question is poorly worded. It really makes no sense. Most women listen to the lies of men like you and end up impregnated and then those like you leave and never come back.

Don't you know this has always been a man's world because women are usually taking care of the children. Running a daycare is a job even if it is your own children. And another thing, I have seen and been of victim of is men being hired to do my same job at a higher wage. So what are you saying? That women cause their own poverty? No. It means that stupid men, probably like you don't know when to wrap your wancker, leaving women with little children they love without your help. You really do need Yahoo answers because you certainly don't have any good ones. You don't even know how to ask the question in a format that most folks can even understand. Don't blame women for poverty, blame those who swear while under the sheets that they love these same women and will take care of them no matter what. Men like you are the cause of poverty if you want to get beligerent. Men are the ones with testosterone who are willing to go forth, no matter the cost, and kill to get what they want. Most women in poverty are there because they have to rely on welfare to help them support their fatherless children. DUH! You are insulting. Get a clue.

If your answer were meaningful men who were independent would be in poverty as well, but statistically speaking that isn't the case.

Sounds like you have been listening to the misleading conservative radio spins on feminism rather than conversing with actual feminists.

I agree with you. femminism has gone way way way to far. The right to work and the right to vote was one thing but now women have so much power they literaly have the majority of men by the balls. allemony, child support and the ever so present cry of sexist comment in the work place employers are so afraid of the lawsuit that if any comment about a sexist comment and the man gets fierd.

Has it ever occurred to you that those women WANTED a happy family life? That they WANTED their husbands to stay with them and help keep the family afloat?
