Well, back then people used to go to the theater a lot more often. There were no televisions. These days people watch TV and go to the theater once in a while expecting basically to see a longer version of what they see on TV. Musical theater is supposed to be something old people and nerds do. The high prices of theater tickets don't help and no one wants to do the research to find discounts. We have become an instant gratification society, waiting a week to see the continuation of a crappy TV show is as long as anyone is willing to wait., research is unheard of.

Partly it is the legal tangles reguarding the music.
However I disagree with your premise. "School Of Rock" was a huge hit. "High School The Musical" and "The Phantom Of The Opera" did okay. Even "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown" and "Festival Express" were critically successful. Add in "De-Lovely," "Blues Brothers 2000," and the ones you listed, suddenly it seem that the genre has some strong life in it.
Films from India seem to require musical numbers. Given that India hasone of the largest populations in the world; I guess that musical films will live on.

Musicals are costly & were on the decline in the 60s but the "realism" of 70s cinema pretty much ruined musicals for good. The movie going public all of a sudden wanted to see movies that reflected their lives.
So, the actors that came along were more actor & less showmen. You really need showmen in order to put together a good musical. Hollywood is full of "actors" but no showmen (song & dance men/women.) Too bad really.

i admire musicals my ordinary fave is THE ROCKY HORROR image coach a cult classic from the strategies of Richard o Brian with a large solid, a could see on your lifetime. notwithstanding the Phantom Of The Opera is barely a tiny tiny tinest volume in the back of. Tho different close followers are Grease, Sound of music, adult males and Dolls, West factor tale, Caberet, the checklist would desire to bypass on invariably.

I think in so many movies today the soundtrack is carefully chosen songs that add to or supports the movie, and that they are todays equivilant to the musical. You can even buy the soundtracks to many movies on CD.

People and their tastes have changed...I watch alot of the old stuff. I really like it...My sister, my mom and my kids all ask "How can you stand that stuff?" I like the over the top acting and singing and find it fascinating all the glamour that went into those bigger than life productions.
