Depending on where you live, there are laws that obligate the leasor to replace the carpet at regular intervals.
I will tell you this...
When I ripped up my carpet, there was so much dirt, and since there was spills on the carpet, it just sat in the padding. I cannot tell you if there was mold, it was not obvious, but I do know that I will never live with carpet again after seeing what was underneath my carpet. Please note, that I am not a pig, and vaccuum regularly as well as shampood the carpet once a year.

If you are moving I should think you should be more worried about the carpet in your next place.
You might want to talk to your landlord or building owner about the carpet well before you move. There are two things you can do:
1. Replace the carpet now and have the cost of the carpet taken out of your rent.
2. Move and the carpet will be replaced after you leave. You may be responsible for the cost of the new carpet if you were in that place a significant length of time, or if you were the tenant who caused the most damage to the carpet. Did you do a walkthrough when you first moved in? If so, have a copy of that walkthrough with you when you do the walkthrough when you move out, so you can prove you did not do damage to the carpet.
Yes, it can make you sick. Dust that has collected over time can be breeding grounds for bacteria that feed on skin cells, hairs, and small particles. I have to wear a mask every time I deep clean my 20-year-old carpet, or I get sick with cold symtoms such as sore throat, nasal congestion, and fevers that very day from inhaling the dust. But I have also gotten sick from polyester carpets - I may be sensitive to the chemicals used to make them. Like I said, be more concerned about the carpet in your next place. You may be able to insist on new carpet installed before moving in.
Good Luck

Things definitely can fester and live in carpet, but most of those 'things' can be taken care of by a professional steam cleaner. It is more likely up to the owner and the new tenants than it is up to you to replace the carpet.

carpet is dirtier than city streets. It is very unsanitary no matter what it looks like at the surface.

If you are moving I would not worry too much about it though. Just keep your face out of it and use a good vac when you do clean it. For future reference, carpet is always dirty.

one unseen danger is mold. just by looking at it you can't tell, but if there was ever any water damage to the carpet in the past it would very well make you sick.
